THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the NAACP establish, as a standing committee at the local, statewide, conference-wide, and national levels, the “WIN COMMITTEE.”

What is WIN

Women in the NAACP (WIN) is a standing committee and an integral arm of the NAACP dedicated to enhancing the leadership roles of women and advocating for the needs of women and children.

Organized in 1980 by Frances Louise Dancy Hooks and Earleen Bolden, it was formally approved as a national standing committee in 2004. Its mission is captured in its national theme: “Outstretched Hands and Open Hearts to Women and Children.”

Core Objectives

  • Leadership Development: To enhance the leadership roles of women both within the Association and in the broader community.

  • Advocacy: To serve as a vehicle for addressing social, economic, political, educational, and health issues affecting women and girls.

  • Child Development: To advocate for the emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual development of children.

  • Mission Support: To support the ongoing work and civil rights mission of the NAACP and its local units.

Programmatic Focus Areas

WIN committees often focus on specific initiatives such as:

  • Health Awareness: Addressing SIDS, HIV/AIDS, breast cancer, and maternal health.

  • Financial Literacy: Conducting training sessions on economic empowerment and wealth building.

  • Community Support: Adopting women’s shelters, mentoring girls, and providing emergency relief during disasters.

  • Civic Engagement: Supporting voter registration, education, and encouraging women to run for public office.

Membership

WIN membership is open to any bona fide member of the NAACP (regardless of gender) upon payment of the WIN membership fee, which is typically $10.00.
